The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel was opened in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route that surrounds Jerusalem, Israel’s capital city.
The tunnel runs along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Motza route. Its southern entrance is located below Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance can be found in Nahal Ein Kerem.
The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel was officially opened in a ceremony held on Thursday that was attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

Elkin his ministry, which together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, stated that his ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year to develop the tourism industry in Jerusalem and also in the development of exciting tourist attractions and ventures that link the glorious historical past of our eternal capital to the future of Jerusalem… I encourage you to take your bicycles on a scenic and well-maintained road that overlooks Old Jerusalem.

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to move its main sewer line to the Sorek purification plant.

To make the tunnel accessible to the public all year round The works comprise road construction and installing blowers.
The Kerem Tunnel also allows access to unique recreation spots – including the Ein Kerem neighborhood, the biblical zoo, aquarium and the along with the historic natural springs of Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
