The Kerem Tunnel is a great place to ride and hike.
The Kerem Tunnel is the first cycle tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was opened as a part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles Jerusalem, the capital city.
The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the closest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.
The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially inaugurated by Jerusalem’s Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin. The ceremony was also attended by Mayor Moshelion, Avi Balehnikov, Gihon Water Company chairman, and hundreds of cyclists.
Jerusalem was once a popular tourist attraction due to its rich history. Elkin said that the present tourism industry is an integral part of Jerusalem’s treasures from the past and is also a part of modern-day tourism. “The opening (of the tunnel) is another aspect of the expansion of Jerusalem, and it’s transformation into a sought-after city to visit for all kinds of people across Israel and around the world.”
Elkin the minister whose ministry as well as the Jerusalem Municipality led the project, said that his ministry “invests hundreds to millions of shekels annually in the development all aspects Jerusalem’s tourism and the design and operation of innovative tourist attractions, ventures, and activities which connect the rich past of our eternal city to the future”. I would like to invite cyclists to join us and take a ride along an up-to-date and well-maintained cycling route that offers a view of the unique landscape of Old Jerusalem.”

Elkin stressed, “The Kerem Tunnel project is a key instrument in achieving our goal to change the way transportation is conducted in Jerusalem.” Elkin explained that the proposed tunnel will connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike routes. It will also be paved in its different neighborhoods. It will also increase cycling and encourage green transport in Jerusalem.

It is used today as an infrastructure tunnel that also includes the fifth water line to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.

To make the tunnel usable to the general public throughout the year, the works include road construction, as well as installation of blowers.
