    The Kerem Tunnel is a great place to ride and hike.

    The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest bicycle tunnel, has been constructed as a part of a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles the capital.

    The tunnel links the paths between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is in Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entrance, Nahal Ein Kerem, is approximately half a mile away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.

    The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel was officially opened in a ceremony held on Thursday that was attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’evElkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov and hundreds of cyclists.

    Jerusalem was once a tourist attraction because of its rich past. Elkin added that in addition to its historical treasures, modern tourism is also integrated into the Jerusalem city. “The inauguration (of tunnel project is another aspect of the development of Jerusalem and the transformation of Jerusalem into a popular tourist city for all sorts of visitors throughout Israel as well as around the world.”

    Elkin, whose ministry together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, said his ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the development of the tourism industry in Jerusalem and the development of new attractions and ventures that connect the rich history of our capital city’s eternal past to the future of Jerusalem… I would like to invite cyclists to ride along a the modern, well-maintained cycling route overlooking the unique landscape of Old Jerusalem.

It is used today as an infrastructure tunnel that includes the fifth water line that connects to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.
