The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s first cycle tunnel, was inaugurated as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycling route surrounds Jerusalem.
The tunnel runs along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Motza path. The tunnel’s southern entrance is beneath Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance can be found in Nahal Ein Kerem.
The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was inaugurated by Jerusalem’s Heritage Minister ZeevElkin. The ceremony was also attended by Mayor Moshelion Avi Balehnikov, Gihon Water Company Chairman, as well as many cyclists.
Jerusalem was once well-known tourist destination due to its historic past. Elkin’s Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the work.
Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool for achieving the vision to change the way of thinking and transport throughout Jerusalem. “The tunnel, which will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect with existing cycle paths within the city, as well as the ones that will be paved within its various neighborhoods. It’s designed to encourage bicycle riding within the city’s residents and to promote an environmentally sustainable transportation system in Jerusalem.”
The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the late 1990s to relocate the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant in Sorek It is situated just west of the city. It is used today as an infrastructure tunnel that includes the fifth water line, which connects to Jerusalem of the Mekorot water company.

The works currently underway include road construction, installation of blowers and advanced security and electrical systems to ensure the tunnel is safe for pedestrians to travel through all year round.
It is also possible to use the Kerem Tunnel to enjoy unique recreation areas, such as Ein Kerem, the Biblical aquarium, zoo and Ein Kerem neighborhood.
