As part of the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route that runs around the capital city, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.

It connects Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. The tunnel’s southern entry point can be found in Refaim Park below Ein Laban. The northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem about half one kilometer away from the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was inaugurated by Jerusalem’s Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin. It was also attended by Mayor Moshelion Avi Balehnikov Gihon Water Company Chairman, and hundreds of cyclists.

The city’s rich history was a reason that it was a popular tourist attraction in the past. נווה פריצקי Elkin said that today in addition to its historic treasures, it is also a destination for modern-day tourists. “The opening of this tunnel project is another part of the growth of Jerusalem as a city. Jerusalem and its transformation into a desirable city that is attractive to all types of visitors throughout Israel as well as around the world.”

Elkin, whose ministry and the Jerusalem Municipality led the project, stated that his ministry “invests hundreds to millions of shekels annually to develop all aspects of Jerusalem’s tourism and the creation and operation of innovative tourist attractions, ventures, and activities that link the rich history of Jerusalem to its future”. I invite all cyclists to come and take a ride along the new, well-maintained and modern route that takes in the view of Old Jerusalem.

The project was funded by the Elkin’s Ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included the budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool for achieving the idea to alter the concept and transport in Jerusalem. “The new tunnel that connects to the Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing bicycle paths and the ones that will be paved within its areas. It’s designed to encourage biking within the city’s residents and to promote the green movement in the capital.”

In the late 1990s in the 1990s, in the 1990s, Kerem Tunnel was excavated to move the main sewer line of Gihon Corporation to the Sorek purification plant. It is currently used for infrastructure purposes. It also houses the fifth water line which is operated to Jerusalem by the Mekorot water company.

The current works include road construction, installation blowers and advanced security systems to ensure the tunnel is safe to use throughout the year.
