The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s first bike tunnel, opened as part of Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycle route is located around Jerusalem.
It links Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. The southern entrance is in Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entrance, Nahal Ein Kerem, is about half a kilometer away from the Kerem junction.
On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin and Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman and hundreds of cyclists participated in a ceremony to officially open the tunnel’s 2.1-kilometer-long length.

Elkin his ministry, which together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, explained that the ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year to develop all aspects of Jerusalem’s tourism and the development of innovative tourist attractions and ventures that link the fascinating history of our eternal capital to its future… I would like to invite cyclists to come and enjoy an up-to-date and well-maintained cycling route that overlooks the special nature of Old Jerusalem.”
נווה פריצקי The project was financed by Elkin’s ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The work was completed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
Elkin stressed, “The Kerem Tunnel project will be a central instrument for realizing our vision to change the way transportation is conducted in Jerusalem.” “The tunnel, which is being constructed to connect to Jerusalem Ring Path will join the existing bike paths as well as ones that are paved in its neighborhoods. It’s designed to encourage biking within the city’s residents and to promote the green revolution in transport in the capital.”
The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the early 1990s in order to shift the main sewer line from the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant located in Sorek, which is located just west of the city. It is used today as an infrastructure tunnel. It also includes the fifth water line, which connects to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.

The Kerem Tunnel also allows access to special recreation areas which include the Ein Kerem neighborhood, the biblical zoo, aquarium and the as well as the historic natural springs in Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
