The Kerem Tunnel is the first cycle tunnel in Israel and was officially opened in the year 2000 as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around Jerusalem, the capital city.
The tunnel links Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. Its southern entry is located within Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entry, Nahal Ein Kerem, is about half a kilometer away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.
On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman and hundreds of cyclists participated in a ceremony to inaugurate the tunnel’s 2.1-kilometer-long length.
Jerusalem’s glorious past was a reason that it was the most visited tourist destination during the time of its glory. Elkin declared that, in the present aside from its historical treasures it is also a destination for modern-day tourists. “The opening of this tunnel project is another part of the expansion of Jerusalem as a city. Jerusalem as well as its development into an attractive city that is attractive to all types of audiences throughout Israel as well as around the world.”
Elkin, whose ministry and the Jerusalem Municipality led the project, said that the Jerusalem Municipality’s ministry “invests hundreds to millions of shekels each year in the development all aspects Jerusalem’s tourists and in the creation and operation of new attractions, ventures , and other attractions that link the rich history of our eternal city to its future”. Elkin’s Ministry, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25,000,000 to the project. Work was performed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
Elkin explained that the Kerem Tunnel project is an important tool in realizing the goal to transform the idea of transport in Jerusalem. “The new tunnel, which will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect with existing cycle paths in the city as well as those that will be constructed within the different neighborhoods. It’s designed to encourage bicycling within the city’s residents and promote the green revolution in transportation in Jerusalem.”
נווה פריצקי The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 90s to move the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently utilized as an infrastructure tunnel which includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water corporation.

Road construction, installation and testing of electrical and safety systems are just a few of the ongoing works to ensure that the tunnel is secure for all seasons.
The Kerem Tunnel also allows access to special recreation areas – including the Ein Kerem neighborhood, the biblical zoo and aquarium and the historical natural springs of Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
