The Kerem Tunnel is a great place to ride and hike.
The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s first bicycle tunnel, was opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycling route surrounds Jerusalem.
The tunnel is located through the Nahal-Refaim-Emek-Motza path. The southern entrance of the tunnel is below Ein Laban in Refaim Park. נווה פריצקי The northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem.
On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and a slew of cyclists were present at a celebration to mark the opening of the tunnel’s 2.1-kilometer-long length.
Jerusalem was a sought-after tourist destination because of its rich past. Elkin explained that the modern tourist industry is a part of Jerusalem’s historic treasures and is also a part of modern-day tourism. “The launch of the tunnel project another element of the development of Jerusalem. Elkin’s ministry, which responsible for the project along with Jerusalem Municipality, stated that his ministry “invests hundreds and millions of shekels each year in all aspects of Jerusalem’s tourism industry and is involved in developing new ventures and attractions which connect the glorious historic past of our eternal capital and the future.” I invite cycling enthusiasts to come and enjoy a modern and well-maintained cycling route that overlooks the special nature of Old Jerusalem.”
Around NIS 25 million were invested in the project, financed by the Elkin’s Ministry The Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality, the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, as well as the work done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
Elkin said that “The Kerem Tunnel Project is an essential tool for achieving the goal to redefine the idea of transport in Jerusalem.” Elkin stated that the new tunnel will connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike paths. The tunnel will also be paved throughout its different neighborhoods. It will also help cyclists and promote green transportation in the capital.
The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the late 90s to relocate the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is now being used as an infrastructure tunnel that includes the fifth waterline that runs to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

Road construction, installation and testing of electrical and safety systems are just a few of the ongoing projects to ensure that the tunnel is secure throughout the year.
The Kerem Tunnel allows for access to unique recreation areas, for instance Ein Kerem, a neighborhood that includes a biblical zoo and aquarium and also the historical natural springs Ein Haniyeh and Ein Laban.
