The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel was opened in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route that surrounds the capital city.
The tunnel connects the path between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. The tunnel’s southern entry point can be found within Refaim Park below Ein Laban. The northern entrance can be found in Nahal Ein Kerem about half an hour away from the Kerem junction.
The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was inaugurated on Thursday, by Jerusalem and heritage minister Ze’evElkin and Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon Chairman of Gihon and a plethora of other cyclists were also present.
The city’s rich history was a reason for it to be an extremely popular tourist destination in the past. Elkin’s Ministry, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25 million for the project. The project was executed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
“The Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool to realize the goal to transform the idea of transportation throughout Jerusalem,” Elkin said. “The new tunnel connecting to Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing paths for bicycles and ones that are paved in its neighborhoods. It is intended to promote biking among the residents of Jerusalem and encourage the green transport revolution in the capital.”
The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to transfer its main sewer line towards the Sorek purification plant.

The works currently underway include road construction, installation of blowers as well as modern security and electrical systems in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for people to walk through all year round.
It is also possible to use the Kerem Tunnel to enjoy unique recreation areas, such as Ein Kerem, the Biblical Zoo, aquarium, and the Ein Kerem neighborhood.
