    The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest cycle tunnel, is inaugurated as part of an extensive cycle path that is a loop around the capital.

    The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. נווה פריצקי The tunnel’s southern entrance is located in Refaim Park below Ein Laban. The northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem about half an hour away from the Kerem junction.

    The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially inaugurated by Jerusalem’s Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin. It was also attended by Mayor Moshelion Avi Balehnikov Gihon Water Company chairman, and hundreds of cyclists.

    Elkin’s Ministerial, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25,000,000 for the project. The work was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

    Elkin stated that the Kerem Tunnel project is an important tool in realizing the goal to transform the idea of transport throughout Jerusalem. “The tunnel, which connects with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will join the existing cycle paths within the city as well as the ones that will be paved within its different neighborhoods. It is designed to encourage bicycle riding within the city’s residents and also to encourage an environmentally sustainable transportation system in Jerusalem.”

    The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the early 1990s in order to shift the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant in Sorek The Sorek Tunnel is located to the west of the city. It is used today as an infrastructure tunnel. It also includes the fifth water line that connects to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.
