Fan Tan is a popular solitaire card game where players attempt to empty their decks first. The four sevens are the only cards that can ever be used initially; the 7 and 8 can only be played once. after the seventh suit is used, the 6 & 8 can only be played, and so forth. When all the playing cards have been used The winner is the player with the highest number of cards, after everyone else has folded. It is usually thought to be an easier version of solitaire, where you do not have to worry about the alternating rows of cards and you don’t have to be concerned about pressing the correct button on your keyboard in order to reveal the Ace of Coins! It’s a nice alternative playing the game by yourself.

Fan Tan was born in China. It is evident by the earliest spelling of the word ‘fantian’ which literally translates to ‘eight cards’. However, it can also be translated to’seven cards facing down’. In certain variations of the game, sevens are represented with coins. This was later changed to sevens and eights in some variations, and they retained their meaning and were no longer considered to be coins. In the modern Fan Tan, each player is dealt nine cards, and can then place their face down on the table, except where there sevens already in the table. The players are then dealt nine cards and are able to rotate looking at the remaining deck, deciding to call to fold, raise or call. If a player stays in their box for three consecutive calls then they are declared to be the winner.

Fan Tan’s origin is unknown. However, the majority of players play it identically to the standard version, with one difference. In some variation of the game the nine cards are not identified and laid out the same way as in the standard version. The only difference is that the session concludes with players being awarded points based on the performance they have made. In the traditional version, the points are added up from the last turn to ensure that the final score will be the sum of all scores for that session.
