In the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route, which surrounds the capital, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Michael, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman and hundreds of cyclists attended a ceremony to officially open the tunnel’s 2.1-kilometer-long length.
Jerusalem’s glorious past was a reason why it was the most visited tourist spot in the past. Elkin said that today aside from its historic treasures, it is also a destination for modern-day tourists. “The opening (of this tunnel project) is a further step in the growth of Jerusalem, and the transformation of Jerusalem into a popular tourist destination for all kinds of audiences across Israel and around the world.”

Elkin’s Ministry, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25,000,000 to the project. Work was performed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
“The Kerem Tunnel project is a central tool for realizing the goal to change the concept of transportation in Jerusalem,” Elkin emphasized. “The new tunnel, which is connected to the lengthy Jerusalem Ring Path, will join existing bike pathways in the city, as well as those that are paved in the various neighborhoods in the hope of encouraging cycling among the city’s residents as well as its visitors, and also in promoting the green revolution of transportation in Jerusalem.”

Present work includes road construction, installation blowers and sophisticated security systems to ensure the tunnel is secure for everyone to use during the entire year.
