The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique adventure in hiking and riding which is enjoyed by everyone.

The Kerem Tunnel is the first bike tunnel in Israel and was officially opened in the year 2000 as a part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around the capital.

The tunnel runs along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Motza route. Its southern entrance is in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban while the northern entrance is in Nahal Ein Kerem, about half a mile close to the Kerem junction.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin and Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and a slew of cyclists participated in a ceremony to inaugurate the tunnel’s 2.1-kilometer-long length.

Jerusalem was once popular tourist destination because of its historic past. Elkin, who heads the project together with Jerusalem Municipality said that his ministry invests hundreds of millions in the development of Jerusalem’s tourism and also in the development of new activities and ventures that tie the rich history of Jerusalem to its future. I invite cycling enthusiasts to visit and enjoy an up-to-date and well-maintained cycling route that takes in the unique nature of Old Jerusalem.”

Elkin’s Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.

Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool for achieving the vision to change the way of thinking and transportation throughout Jerusalem. Elkin explained that the proposed tunnel will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike routes. It will also be paved in the various areas. It will also increase cycling and encourage green transport in Jerusalem.

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s to relocate its main sewer line to the Sorek purification plant.

The current projects include road construction, installation blowers as well as advanced safety equipment to ensure the tunnel is safe for all to use during the entire year.

The Kerem Tunnel provides access to unique recreation locations, including Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the Biblical aquarium and zoo as well the historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban Ein Laban, and Ein Haniyeh.
