The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest cycle tunnel, was constructed as a part of a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles the capital.
The tunnel connects the path between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is located in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban, and the northern entrance is in Nahal Ein Kerem, about half a mile close to the Kerem junction.
Inauguration of the tunnel, which is 2.1 kilometers long, was held in Jerusalem and the Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion and Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman of the company) and hundreds more cyclists.

Elkin’s Ministry and the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.
Elkin stressed, “The Kerem Tunnel project is a key instrument for achieving our dream to change the way transportation is conducted in Jerusalem.” Elkin explained that the proposed tunnel connects with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike routes. It will also be paved throughout its various neighborhoods. This will increase cycling and encourage green transport in Jerusalem.
The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the early 1990s in order to shift the main sewer line from the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant located in Sorek, which is located just west of the city. It is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel. It also houses the fifth water line that connects to Jerusalem of the Mekorot water company.

The work currently in progress includes road construction, the installation of blowers and advanced security and electrical systems to make the tunnel safe for the public to pass through at all times of the year.
Kerem Tunnel Kerem Tunnel allows for access to exclusive recreation areas such as Ein Kerem, a neighborhood that includes a biblical aquarium and zoo as well as historical natural springs Ein Haniyeh and Ein Laban.
