    The Kerem Tunnel is a great spot to hike and ride.

    On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Michael, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman and hundreds of cyclists participated in a ceremony to mark the opening of the tunnel’s 2.1-kilometer-long length.

    Elkin who, along with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, stated that the ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the development of Jerusalem’s tourism in all its aspects and in the creation of innovative attractions and ventures that connect the fascinating history of our capital city to its future… I invite all cyclists to take a trip and enjoy the new, well-maintained and modern route that takes in the view of Old Jerusalem.

    Around NIS 25 million were put into in the project, financed by the Elkin’s Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, with the work carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

    Elkin declared that the Kerem Tunnel project was a important tool to realize the goal of shifting the idea of transportation throughout Jerusalem. “The new tunnel, which connects to the lengthy Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect the existing bike pathways in the city, as well as those that are paved in the various neighborhoods with the aim of encouraging cycling among its residents and its visitors, and also in promoting the green revolution of transportation in the capital city.”

    The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the early 1990s in order to shift the main sewer line from the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant located in Sorek, which is located just west of the city. It is currently being used as an infrastructure tunnel that includes the fifth water line that connects to Jerusalem of the Mekorot water company.

    Construction of roads, installation, blowers, advanced safety systems , and electrical wiring are all part of the current construction. The tunnel will be safe for the public to use throughout the year.

    The Kerem Tunnel also allows access to unique recreation sites – including the Ein Kerem neighborhood, the biblical zoo and aquarium, and the historical natural springs of Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
