The Kerem Tunnel allows for a unique hiking and riding experience.
נווה פריצקי The Kerem Tunnel is the first bicycle tunnel in Israel and was officially opened in the year 2000 as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles the capital.
The tunnel links the paths between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. The tunnel’s southern entry point is located within Refaim Park below Ein Laban. The northern entrance can be found in Nahal Ein Kerem about half one kilometer from the Kerem junction.
On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Michael, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and hundreds of cyclists participated in a ceremony to officially open the tunnel’s 2.1-kilometer-long length.
Jerusalem was once a major tourist attraction because of its rich past. Elkin stated that, today, apart from its historical treasures it also incorporates modern tourists. “The launch of the tunnel is a further stage in the growth of Jerusalem as a tourism destination for all kinds of tourists in Israel and all over the world.”
Elkin, who heads the project in conjunction with Jerusalem Municipality said that his ministry invests millions of dollars in Jerusalem’s tourism development and in the creation innovative attractions and ventures that link the glorious past of Jerusalem to its future. Elkin’s Ministry Elkin’s Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality, and the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the work.
Elkin declared that the Kerem Tunnel project was a crucial element in achieving the goal of altering the way of transport throughout Jerusalem. “The new tunnel connecting to Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing paths for bicycles and ones that are paved in the neighborhoods. It is intended to promote biking among its residents and promote the green movement in the capital.”
In the 1990s, the Kerem Tunnel was excavated to relocate the main sewer line of Gihon Corporation to the Sorek purification plant. It is now used as an infrastructure tunnel and houses the fifth water line to Jerusalem by the Mekorot water company.

Construction of roads and installation, as well as blowers, sophisticated safety systems and electrical wiring are all part and parcel of the current construction. The tunnel will be safe for public to use throughout the entire year.
