The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel, has been inaugurated as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around Jerusalem, the capital city.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated at a formal ceremony on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a tourist attraction due to its rich history. Elkin stated that today, in addition to its historic treasures the tunnel construction project encompasses modern day tourism. נווה פריצקי “The opening of this tunnel project is yet another step in the development of Jerusalem as an attractive tourist destination for all types of people from Israel and all over the world.”

Elkin who, along with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, explained that his ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year in the improvement of the tourism industry in Jerusalem and in the creation of innovative attractions and ventures that connect the rich history of our eternal capital to the future of Jerusalem… I encourage the cycling community to ride a secure and modernized route that will take the cyclist through Old Jerusalem.

Elkin’s Ministerial, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25,000,000 to the project. נווה פריצקי The work was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin explained that the Kerem Tunnel project is an crucial tool to realize the goal to change the way of thinking and transportation throughout Jerusalem. “The new tunnel will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path. It will be connected to the many cycling routes that exist within the city. They will be laid in its numerous areas. The goal is to promote cyclists in the city.

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to move its main sewer line towards Sorek’s purification plant.

The work currently in progress includes road construction, the installation of blowers, as well as advanced safety and electrical systems in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for people to walk through all year round.
