The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique adventure in hiking and riding that should be enjoyed by everyone.
The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s first bicycle tunnel, was opened as part of Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycling route surrounds Jerusalem.
It connects Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance located in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the nearest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.
Inauguration of the tunnel, which is 2.1 kilometers long took place in Jerusalem and the Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman) and hundreds more cyclists.
“In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive tourist city due to its rich past. Elkin who’s ministry spearheaded the project along with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry had invested thousands of shekels every year in Jerusalem’s tourist development as well as in creating new activities and ventures which will link the amazing historical past with the exciting the future of Jerusalem. I invite cyclists to enjoy an attractive, well-maintained cycling route overlooking the unique scenery of Old Jerusalem.
Elkin’s Ministry and the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.
“The Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool to realize the vision to change the concept of transportation throughout Jerusalem,” Elkin said. “The new tunnel will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path. It will connect with the various cycling routes that exist within the city. The paths will be paved in its various neighborhoods. The goal is to promote cyclists in Jerusalem.
The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in the year 1990 to relocate the main sewers of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. The plant is located west of Sorek and is still used as an infrastructure tunnel.
