The Kerem Tunnel is the first cycle tunnel in Israel and was inaugurated as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles the capital.

The tunnel connects the path between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. The southern entrance is in Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entrance, Nahal Ein Kerem, is just half a kilometer away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was inaugurated at a formal ceremony on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’evElkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

The project was funded by Elkin’s ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s to relocate its main sewer line to Sorek’s purification plant.
