The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest cycle tunnel, is constructed as a part of the 42-kilometer cycle route which circles the capital.
The tunnel links Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the closest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.
Inauguration of the tunnel that is 2.1 kilometers long took place in Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman) along with hundreds of cyclists.
Jerusalem’s rich past was the main reason for it to be the most visited tourist destination in the past. Elkin said that the present tourist industry is a part of Jerusalem’s treasures from the past and incorporates modern day tourism. “The inauguration of this tunnel is another aspect of the growth of Jerusalem. Elkin’s Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the work.
Elkin stressed, “The Kerem Tunnel project will be the central tool in achieving our goal to change the concept transportation throughout Jerusalem.” “The tunnel, which is being constructed to connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing paths for bicycles and the ones that will be paved within its areas. The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the 1990s to move the main sewer line from the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant in Sorek, which is located just west of the city. It is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel that includes the fifth water line that connects to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.
